Lesson Planning - Five Components
Component 1: Characteristics of Adults as Learners Website URL: http://ctle.hccs.edu/facultyportal/tlp/seminars/tl1071SupportiveResources/Ten_Characteristics_Adults-Learners.pdf Rationale for selecting this resource: Dr. Gary Kuhne wrote this document as part of a course content for "ADTED 460 - Introduction to Adult Education," which is offered through Penn State's World Campus. After considering various articles, I selected this document since it not only provided a complete description of the characteristics of the adult learner, but it extends the information to address the implications on education of these characteristics. To create success in teaching adult learners I would take my audience into consideration and build some flexibility into my teaching materials and the presentation thereof. Component 2: Creating a Positive Learning Environment Website URL: http://trainerhub.com/creating-the-ideal-learning-environment-emotional/ (Boudreau, 2012) Rationale for selecting this resource: This article provides useful information about creating the ideal learning environment. Dan Boudreau recognizes that the intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical aspects of a positive learning environment cannot be separated. On this particular article, he offers 10 suggestions to establish a positive learning Environment emotionally. Separate links to creating the Ideal Learning Environments: Physical and intellectually, are also provided on this site. As an educator I can incorporate these techniques to capture the interest of my students and keep them engaged. I will take the materials, environment and the emotional aspects of my audience into consideration. Component 3: Adult Learner Motivational Techniques Website URL: http://www.facultyfocus.com/articles/teaching-and-learning/nine-strategies-to-spark-adult-students-intrinsic-motivation/ (Battista, 2014) Rationale for selecting this resource: This article discuss how we can aim to shift the student’s mindset from an extrinsic reward mindset to the commitment to pursue education for the deeper and longer-lasting intrinsic value. It further provides Instructional Strategies and Intrinsic Motivators to encourage participation of learners and to meet the needs of each individual student while teaching (McDaniel & Brown, 2001). I would strive to be approachable as an Instructor and aim to help my students see the value in what they are learning. I would incorporate various instructional strategies such as encouraging students to draw on past experiences and active participation and dialog. Component 4: Assessment and Feedback Website URL: https://teal.ed.gov/tealguide/understanding (The Teacher Excellence in Adult Literacy (TEAL) Center, 2012) Rationale for selecting this resource: This article provide useful information on formative assessment that explain how to “plan, monitor and use feedback”. It illustrates how learners can meet their learning goals through formative assessment and constructive feedback. Guidelines on this site include some roadmaps to instructors as well as suggestions for the classroom practice. By using formative assessment as an Instructor, I would have a sense of where my students are in the learning process and gauge whether I could proceed to the next topic, or if revision is needed on the current topic. Soliciting feedback from my students will help to improve the quality of my teaching. Component 5: Framework Website URL: http://www.lc2.ca/item/41-preparing-a-lesson-plan (Doherty, 2012) Rationale for selecting this resource: This particular article focusses on the BOPPPS model of lesson planning. It’s clear and concise layout of the lesson plan model and the suggestions for application in each category peaked my interest. This resource further provides a video illustrating this model in action and also have a link for downloadable templates. As an instructor I would organize lessons and plan ahead for alignment of activities and assessment strategies to achieve learning objectives. This article emphasizes the use of templates in courses to help me manage the time frame and resources that may be needed for future lessons. References Battista, L. a. R. V., 2014.
